Consistent ball striking

In order for you to hit the ball consistently well and further then the most important factor is you have to strike the ball correctly. I guarantee the best shots you have ever hit in your golf life have not been the shots you’ve hit the hardest but ones you have struck the best. The best way to strike the ball consistently well is as follows.

Square club face at impact

If your club face is square (pointing towards the target) at impact then this will help find the sweet spot of the golf club. If your club is open (pointing right at impact) then the ball will roll towards the toe and the shot will go to the right.

If your club is closed (club face pointing left at impact) then the ball will roll towards the heel and send the shot left. Both open and closed can also cause a shank. Grip will play the biggest part in your club face angle.

Keeping still through the swing

No big movements side to side or up and down on your back swing and down swing will help create a more consistent strike. If we can get you back to the impact position, the same as your address position then you will strike the ball well so no big movements will help create consistency. Do you know that a Tour player’s head only moves around 1 inch on the back swing and down swing.

Ball position

Make sure your ball is in the correct position so you can strike the ball at the bottom of the arc of your swing creating the perfect strike. Short irons middle of your stance and as the club gets longer and less loft move the ball closer to your left foot until the driver is level with your left heel.

Swing in tempo

Keeping your swing in a tempo that suits you is vital to strike the ball well. To slow will cause lack of speed that will stop you striking the ball well. Too quick in the tempo and that will effect your timing which will result in a poor struck shot. Try to always swing to your capabilities and never over power the golf shot.

Fancy a free lesson

Introduce a new person to the Patrick Smith golf academy and join them for the lesson and we will teach you for free. We have signed up to National golf month, which is in May, and this is one of the offers. What’s the pro shop staff been up to?

This week has now turned into a very teaching week after we had to move lessons last week due to the rain. I will be away Friday morning attending Graham Needhams funeral. Graham sponsored me when I joined the club and will be sadly missed by everybody. Noel has now been operated on and although very sore should now get better and better and all being well should be back with us in around 4 weeks time. My dad continues to try and keep peoples trolleys on the course and continues to be busy. Steve has been doing a great job with the kids on a Saturday morning and has been excellent in the shop whilst Noel has been away.
