Competition news

Walker takes the crown

Last Saturday Kidderminster hosted it's annual men's open. With a full field of over 140 players the day was excellent. The course was looking amazing, with great feedback from many visitors, as well as members. The weather also swung in our favour, which makes a difference for us because opens usual bring us torrential rain and snow so we were very lucky on Saturday.

The Stewart Smith trophy is for the best gross score on the day, in the event of a tie it's a sudden death playoff. This year we witness our first playoff. All sitting on 71, Kidderminster's own Mark Dudley and Luke Rogers both secured their playoff places alongside Oliver Walker from Bransford golf club. On the first extra hole, Oliver hit his wedge to around 25 feet and then sank the putt to win the trophy. Congratulation to Oliver on a great win and commiserations to Mark who was last year's winner and Luke for just missing out. Also we ran a nett competition and again Kidderminster members came out on top with Nick White, Andy Baylis, and James Cobley all in the prizes and a great score for Andy Spare to win the nett prize.

English boys midland qualifier

Kidderminster is hosting the English boys, county midland qualifier. Wednesday is practice day and Thursday is a 36 hole medal. The leading county will move to the next stages. We have 60 boys playing and 10 counties. Players with handicaps from +2 to 6 will battle it out.

School half term camp

On Wednesday Noel ran a half term camp for the juniors and everyone who is involved in our academy. Although many are away on holiday we still managed to get 12 kids to the camp so a good day had by all.

Tip of the week

Slow play can kill the game

Having attended several meetings talking about getting more people into golf and what is the biggest stumbling block when people play golf. One of the biggest reason is slow play. People get very frustrated when the pace of play is very slow. Please always remember a few tips to help keep up with the group in front of you:

1. Always leave your trolley near your exit to the next tee.
2. Mark your card on the next tee.
3. Be ready to play your shot before its your turn
4. When looking for a ball you have 5 minutes but let the next group through if you are looking.
5. Play a provisional ball if you think it might be lost.

All the above will help speed up play.

Pros fun day

A family day out at Hatton Park

On Sunday I took the family to Hatton Park for the day. We had a great day and much deserved day out. This time of year the golf can take over my life and my family life can suffer so we always try and have nice days out when possible.

What's the pro shop staff up this week?

This week is getting crazy.

I'm away Thursday with the family as its half term. Another very busy week teaching. I'm struggling with a back injury and also a chest infection so I hope I can keep going this week.

Noel is away Friday playing Cleobury in a pro am. James is away on holiday this week. Ethan will be in a little more this week as its half term at college.

My Dad is quite busy with the trolleys at the moment.

Have a great week.
