Master your iron play - PING

Greetings from Patrick Smith

Think your way to a better score

This time of year now the course is getting firm, its therefore vital that you have good course management to get your ball around the course in as little number as you possibly can. When you're playing good golf it can be easy to keep hitting the fairways and greens and not have a problem with course management, I find the art of a good golfer is when they are hitting the ball bad they can still get a good score. Here are a few tips to help you with course management.

1. Look where the trouble is

If you are undecided on what club to take from the tee or into the green have a look at where the trouble is. Off the tee its usually the longer you hit the tee shot so sometimes maybe a fairway wood or hybrid might be the right option. If you're hitting into a green and all the trouble is long then take less club if all the trouble is short than take more club.

2. Take the weather into account

When using the 150 and 100 yard posts they are to the centre of the greens, the yardage to the pin can vary by 1 to 2 clubs. Also the wind can play a big part in choosing the correct club. Check the wind before hitting by throwing up some loose grass. With the greens becoming firmer, that can also have an effect on club selection.

3. Take your medicine

If you have hit the ball into trouble always take the percentage shot and get the ball back into play. If you're looking for the glory shot this will generally put you in even bigger trouble than you were in before.

4. Getting close to the green can become a problem

If you have a shot that you can't reach the green with, always give yourself a full shot into the green. I think for amateur golfers a full shot is easier than a half shot. If you have 220 yards to the green don't hit the ball 200 yards and leave yourself a little pitch over a bunker to a firm green, hit the ball around 150-160 yards and leave yourself a full iron shot in. In the full swing you can hit the ball higher and generate more spin than you can a short shot.

5. Get a yardage your good from

The best golfers in the world have a yardage that they are very good from. They practice this yardage a lot to get the shot as perfect as they can and then when they are laying up or in trouble they will try and leave the ball at that yardage. This would help you game and control if you can practice this. Get down the practice ground and hit many shots and find out what yardage feels most comfortable to you.

6. Know your yardages

How far do you hit each club? This is vital to getting the ball around the golf course and keeping it away from trouble. How are you supposed to keep the ball away from danger when you don't know how far you hit it.

Implement some of the above and let me know if this has helped your game. If you would like more information then book a assessment lesson with me by clicking here.

What has the pro shop staff been up to?

The next couple of weeks are very busy. I'm away with a group of members this week to Royal St Georges, I'm back at work on Friday. On Tuesday I'm away with my wife and daughter for a few days making the most of the weather and school holidays. I will be back at work on the Friday and then back to normal the following week. Noel is returning at the start of June all being well and Steve and my dad continue to be busy in the shop and on the trolley front.
