Bunkers, good or bad for you??
Teaching many members and non members many people this time of year have issues in bunkers.
I hear many people complain that
1. There's no sand
2. There's to much sand
3. They are to compacted
What would defiantly help the bunkers is when you rake the bunkers you push the sand into the bunker and not to back rake the sand. Pushing the sand in to the middle would make a big difference to the sand and bunkers.
Sometimes certain bunker shots do have the above complaints however I would say 80% to 90% of bad bunker shots are down to
1. Poor technique
2. Using the wrong wedge.
In terms of technique I will explain the basic bunker shot and all being well this will help your bunker play and reduce your scores.
1. Shuffle your feet into the sand. This will help create balance, gives you an idea of what depth the sand is and helps lower your centre of gravity to hit below the ball.
2. Stance is over shoulder width apart to help create balance and create a good foundation to make a swing.
3. Ball position is 2 inches in front of the middle of your stance.
4. Swing the club along the line of your feet and make sure you swing the club upright, thumbs point to the sky as can be seen in the attached image.
5. Concentrate on striking a inch behind the ball.
Don't look so much at the ball, concentrate on the inch behind.
The club should hit the sand first.
6. Once you've hit the inch behind the ball make sure you fully follow through and your whole body points to the target.
Stay committed and think positively and if you do the above you will hit better shots.
If your still struggling pop in the shop and we can look at what wedges you use and the bounce and loft angles and make sure the wedges your using are correct.
