John Cullen is the man of the moment The Stewart Smith Challenge Cup has been played for since 1909. This year’s entry was full with additional tee times added. The day started murky but soon changed in the afternoon to glorious sunshine. With a top prize of £250 the battle was hard fought. After 18 holes there was a tie between Nathan Slater of Bewdley Pines Golf Club and John Cullen of Redditch Golf Club. Rules of the competition mean a sudden death playoff. The holes chosen by the Club Captain were 1,2,12 and 18. The first was halved in 4, the second in 5 with both players shaving the hole for birdies. On hole 12 both players comfortably drove over the fairway bunkers to leave short shots to the green. Nathan missed his birdie but John Cullen rattled it in to become the current holder of the Stewart Smith Challenge Cup. Well done John. P.S. in the photo Nathan is on the left. |
