Golfing terms you might not understand

Do you read golf magazines and sometimes don't understand a word or a phrase that they use. This week I will explain two that over the next few months you will hear many times over by manufactures.

Smash factor

What is smash factor? A term used by so many people. Smash factor is the golfer's ability to translate club head speed into ball speed. For example Bob's club head speed is 100mph and his ball speed is 150mph his smash factor would be 1.5. The higher the smash factor the more efficient your club is working. You can increase smash factor by having a slower club head speed. Meaning the ball could go further by hitting it softer. The average smash factor for a amateur is 1.2. Bubba Watsons smash factor is 1.52. What is your smash factor? When the season starts we will be able to let you know your smash factor and to make sure your clubs are working for you.

MOI

What is MOI. Moment of inertia. MOI is the resistant to the club head twisting through impact. The higher the MOI the less twisting meaning off centred strikes will go straighter. Golf club makers are now working on making MOI as high as they can to hit the ball straighter. Titleist 915s have a very high MOI. The best way to make the MOI higher on a golf club is by moving the weight out wards towards the perimeter.

So there you have it. Two new golfing terms. If you have other golfing terms you don't understand please let me know and we will be glad to help you.

Kids Christmas Party

40 children are now down for the kid's party. I would like another 10 if possible so please if you're free and looking for a great afternoon let me know and I can add your loved one to the list.

So what's the pro shop up to this week?

This week is time to wrap up warm and get out and teach. My teaching is slowing down as the weather gets colder and the ground conditions get harder to hit golf balls from. I'm away Thursday tackling the German market. Noel continues to be busy teaching and has now started hitting a few short shots. Jack keep learning everyday what the shop is all about and my Dad is busy with the trolleys.

Even your best drives can go missing with plenty of leaves down and the gloomier weather doesn't help. Playing a yellow ball might not be an option for the traditionalists but if it helps you keep the same ball in play…
