SENIORS' CAPTAIN'S AWAY DAY AT OSWESTRY

I was delighted with the support for the "away day" with a manageable number of 44 players, which included our assistant professional, Noel. The weather was very kind to us and one or two light showers were not a problem. Oswestry is a very attractive course. The view from the clubhouse is welcoming and the course lives up to expectations. As is usual, the day started with bacon baps and coffee - a necessity before 18 holes! A putting competition was on the agenda and was played either before the 18 holes or afterwards, depending on the start time of the main game. We enjoyed an excellent meal with a glass of wine or two before we announced the results. They are as follows.

The winners of the main game were Kevin Woodham, Malcolm Taylor, Roger Dodson and the captain with 96 points.

The runners-up were Jim Howell, Mike Caffery, Terry White and Vaughan Reid with 90 points.

The nearest to the pin on the 4th was won by the vice-captain, Frank Concannon, and Roy Evitts won on the 12th.

The longest drive on the 10th was won by Vaughan Reid.

The putting was won by Graham Phillips with a score of 30 over 18 holes. An excellent score with 6 single putts. I forgot to ask his partners how well he putted in the game!

The only 2's were Mike Caffery on the 9th and the captain on the 17th.

As I had inadvertently forgotten the ruling of only one prize, I will be giving Mike Caffery 6 golf balls and Mike Ward a box of 12 for the longest drive.

Not a prize winner but a great performance, Noel made 5 birdies in his round.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who played and made the day so enjoyable for me and, hopefully, for everyone else.

Phil Green,
Seniors' Captain

Presidents' Day

On Saturday we held the Presidents' Day event. This is now one of the most popular events at the golf club. We play for the Sally Battin trophy, which is a trophy kindly donated by Roger and Kay Downing in memory of their daughter. The day was supported by over 120 entries and we managed to raise over £400 for St Richards hospice.

We played a different format and also moved the tees around to make certain holes more interesting. Congratulations to everyone that played and support the day for the president and for the charity.

The winners of the day were:

1st- Derek McCluskey, Jon Rose, Jim Howell and Terry White with an amazing score of 24 under.
2nd- Steve Carter, James Cobley, Steve Beddoes and Mick Dyer with 23 under.
3rd- John Parson, Jim Parson, Roger Downing and Andy Smith with 22 under.
Best mixed team- Karen Greenfield, Sarah Nicklin, Pat Nicklin and Elizabeth Johnstone with 10 under.

11 years and still going strong

On Tuesday I celebrated 11 years as the professional of Kidderminster golf club. I started working for Nick Underwood as a shop assistant in 1994 so I've been in the shop for 21 years but as the professional for 11. I can honestly say it's been a pleasure and a huge honour to be the professional at Kidderminster. We have such an amazing club, great members and we should all feel very lucky and honoured to play on a great golf course. I'm really looking forward to the next 11 years and hope I can help keep moving the club forward.

Junior summer camps always go down well

This summer we have ran 3 summer camps. All the days have been fully booked and all the children that have attended have had a great morning of coaching. We always make it fun, running games and challenges to keep them interested. We will continue our academy coaching on Saturday morning so if you have some interested just let me know.

Have you old clubs that you're not using?

If you have clubs that are 2005 and onwards and are a named brand that you're not using? Do you want to turn this into pro shop credit? Then drop your items off at the shop and we can move them on using a cash for clubs scheme.

Keep I touch and never miss out on what's happening

I have now over 1000 followers on Twitter and more are coming daily. Facebook pro shop site is having over 2000 hits a week. Keep in touch with me and keep communicating using one of the social media sites. Click the links below to follow my sites.

What's the pro shop staff up to this week?

This week is a strange week, Noel is away for a few days playing and looking after his son, my dad is away in Tywyn and Ethan starts back at college so that leaves me in the shop for a few days. It will be nice in a way so I can see members that I sometimes don't see as I'm always on the course or practice ground. If you want to pop in for a chat or coffee please feel free. This week is the start of a very busy schedule for the club. We have matches, opens, society's and many more events. Please keep your eye on the fixture board and on the website so you know the tee times.
