Greens committee v green staff
On Tuesday afternoon, the greens committee took on the green staff in a match. The format was better ball match play but play all 18 holes no matter what score. After much debating about our team selection, our green committee captain (Mike Thompson) sent Steve O'Conner and myself out first against Lurch (Neil Hawkins) and Rich Tompkin. Mike and John Parson then took on Rod Hunter and Callum Hutchinson.
Steve and I led from the front and played well, coming in and out when needed and with a better ball score of 64, we won the match 3 up. Neil being injured did make it slightly easier for us.
Mike and John were unstoppable. Mike started with 3 gross birdies in the first 4 holes and then John made a couple more gross birdies. The match finished 6 up to Mike and John.
The greens committee white washed the green staff and they are now out for revenge with us hopefully rearranging a return match in the next month. Many thanks to Mike who organised the day and to everyone involved for a great day with good banter.
A message from Gill Sanderson
As the bonus ball nears its first achievement, raising £2000 for the new path on the 5th, which has now been started- We welcome new ideas for next year. If you could pass your ideas to Gill, she will then pass them on to the committee. In October, the national lottery will increase their numbers to 59, so the first prize will be £30 with £29 going to our next project. It will be difficult to fill two sheets per week, as I have done in the past year with only 49 numbers to fill. One unusual coincidence, Chris Clarke wins the bonus ball, then the club lottery raffle in the same week, followed by Judy Taylor winning the club raffle followed by the bonus ball, I didn't win one bonus ball but will still keep trying. Thank you for your support. Gill Sanderson.
Phil & Frank win the county Captains day
21 Worcestershire Clubs competed in the annual WUGC Captains & Guest event at Kidderminster GC on Monday 28th September 2015. The day started with sandwiches, chips and tea/coffee before the teams set out from the 1st and 11th tees, in a 4BBB Stableford competition.
With some very experienced players representing their clubs, it was not surprising that the scoring was fantastic. In 4th place were the Burlish Park pair of Andy Simmonds & Gary Guest with 43 points (!!), but the prizes went to:
1st - Phil Green & Frank Concannon (Kidderminster) - 44 point
2nd - Derek Tranter & Mick Price (Kings Norton) - 43 points (back 9)
3rd - Jon Holloway & Tony Sanders (Worcester G&CC) - 43 points (back 6)
Bill Thompson (WUGC Chairman) entertained the guests with a quick, pictorial summary of the key moments of the 2015 season, including the County Team winning the Midland League for the first time for 17 years. Bill also mentioned that the season was far from over, with the Worcestershire Seniors playing in the England Golf County Finals at Robin Hood GC on Tues/Wed/Thurs 6th/7th/8th October.
45 people sat down to a superb 2 course meal during which the prizes were presented by Will Painter (WUGC President). In addition to his role as WUGC President, Will is also a long standing member of Kidderminster GC, and was in the unusual position of thanking his own club for the welcome provided to himself and the County's guests! Will thanked the catering team, the bar staff and the professional team for the friendly and efficient service provided all day. Everyone present echoed Will's thanks to Kidderminster GC, and it as certain that the County will want to return to Kidderminster GC in 2016.
In addition to the normal prizes, the County was also pleased to present all prize winners with a copy of John Moreton's book about the history of the Worcestershire Union.
What's new coming up at the club
Get in to golf a success
Over the past 5 weeks I've been teaching 7 ladies in a get in to golf campaign. We have had great fun. We have worked on short game, mid irons, woods and last Friday we played the first. Unfortunately 4 ladies couldn't make the last session but we still had a great laugh. We will continue with the course in the next month.
What's the pro shop staff up to?
This week is still busy as the weather is amazing for the time of year. Noel and I are away next Tuesday at Harrogate at the trade show planning for next year.
